type='text'>Math Articles (just for enrichment)

related topics: data analysis - mean, median, mode

ARTICLE ONE: INCREASING THE AVERAGE
In Martin Luther King Jr. School, the average iQ of the first-graders is 115. Rosa has an IQ of 110 and is in the first grade of Martin Luther King Jr. School. Her family moves out of the school district, and Rosa enrolls at Jefferson School, where the average IQ of the first-graders is 105. When Rosa leaves the first grade of Martin Luther King Jr. School, the average IQ of that class rises a little because Rosa's IQ was below the class average. When Rosa enrolls in Jefferson School, the average IQ of her new first-grade class also rises because Rosa's IQ is above the class average. Is moving Rosa a way to increase the intelligence of the first-graders of the two schools?

Explanation
Rosa's move did not change her IQ, and it did not change the overall average IQ of the first-graders at the two schools taken together. The two averages of the separate classes increased, but only because that is the way averages can behave. Averages tell the truth and nothing but the truth - but they may not tell the whole truth. And sometimes the truth they tell is not very useful.

ARTICLE TWO: HALF THE WORLD IS STUPID?
A headline of a tabloid newspaper article reads, "Half the World is Stupid!" The article begins with the statement, "As much as 50% of the world's population has a below-average IQ score!" Do you find this statement disturbing? Why?

Explanation
The statement is true and should not be regarded as disturbing. According to convention, the average IQ score is 100. This measurement of 100 is the average in two senses. Not only is it an arithmetic mean, obtained by adding up all individual IQ scores and dividing the sum by the number of people tested, it is also a median, separating the population into two equal halves. Thus it is quite true that half the population has a below average IQ score and half the population has an above average IQ score. This example of what average means is valid in this, and in many other, contexts. Researchers and scholars continue to debate what IQ scores really mean, and for that matter, what "intelligence" is. The fact that a certain psychological measurement is labeled an intelligence in every sense of the word. Additionally, it does not follow that if a person's IQ is below 100, then he or she is "stupid". Even if we accept (and some don't) that an IQ score is an accurate measurement of some human quality, we must recognize that it is a measurement from which sociopolitical conclusions should be drawn with considerable reservations.

Sec 1 Resources to Class Test 1

heyy! Using a mathematical model, scientists at Michigan State University predict the opposite, an inverse relationship between sizes of bacteria and their resource molecules.

Theoretical biologists Kohei Yoshyama and Chris Klausmeier tweaked a model of bacterial growth in an aqueous medium to account for resource transport from medium to the cell surface by molecular diffusion together with biological uptake processes, and derived a negative relationship between sizes of resource molecule and bacterial cell that is most efficient in the resource competition.

They also showed that two bacterial consumers can coexist on two resources that are identical except for their sizes. This result implies that size differences of resource molecules, regardless of the quality, can promote microbial diversity.

"Theoretically, smaller cells are more favored under transport limitation for resource uptake than under limitations by biological processes, such as membrane uptake or catalysis within cells. As resource molecules become smaller, the molecular diffusion speeds up. And then the transport limitation for resource uptake is relaxed, and the optimal cell size becomes larger," states Kohei Yoshiyama, the study's leading author.

He adds, "Species diversity, at least at stable environments, is constrained by number of resources, which previously considered to be finite. Our results add a new dimension to the concept of 'resource', making the number of resources infinite."

The study "Optimal cell size for resource uptake in fluids: a new facet of resource competition" authored by Kohei Yoshiyama and Christopher A. Klausmeier (Michigan State University) was published in the January issue of the American Naturalist.

Reference:
University of Chicago Press Journals (2008, January 7).
